Yes I wore aviators to the drone test. And I will again next time, damnit.

When you operate a drone professionally, you have to be licensed by the FAA. Not only that, but you need to get re-tested every two years to keep that license.

Now, a lot of the questions on the test are somewhat irrelevant to the Pilot-in-Command (PiC) of a small camera drone like the ones I fly. But even accepting that, I think it’s really important to take a test like this and learn the absolute bare minimum about airspace, and air traffic safety.

The fact of the matter is even if we treat these gadgets as toys, I’m sending a reasonably heavy projectile into the air at pretty high speed and controlling it with a remote that looks like a PlayStation controller. That’s something that needs to be taken seriously.

Not crazy about the $150 testing fee, though…
